How to be a Bawse: Review

This book is a self-help book written for young adults. But I am sure people of all ages young and old will be able to relate to this book. This book is definitely not a one-time read.  I am sure most of you would be taking notes, doing exercises, and when you are done reading the book, it will be in tatters. The author has already predicted that as well.  Be sure to get a hard-bound copy.

The book-reading journey has been immensely reinforcing to me personally so I decide to write a review of it.

For those of you who do not know about the author:

“How To Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life” has been authored by Lilly Singh. She started her Youtube career in October 2010 under the screen name iisuperwomanii when she was undergoing depression.

“I was the first South Asian female to do comedy videos on YouTube. But at the same time, all races face their barriers, and I’ve learned through YouTube, if it’s not race, it will be sexism, if it’s not sexism, it will be homophobia. It will always be something, and all voices should be heard”. – Lilly Singh

Now at 2017, she stands to be a budding actress who has debuted in a movie, “A Trip to Unicorn Island” and made guest appearances in films and TV shows. She has worked with many celebrities notably, The Rock – Dwayne Johnson, Bill Gates and Michelle Obama. She is listed in Forbes —“Achievers under the age of 30”. She has released 3 singles so far and has collaborated with other artists to release public interest and positive messages.

She has started a cause called #girllove, to stop the girl-on-girl hate. She went to Kenya and raised funds to empower girl children to go to school.

But the best achievement so far is that she has over 11 million subscribers on her Youtube channel.  Youtube awarded a feature called ‘community’ to her (this was awarded only to 9 other Youtube channels), mainly because she has one of the largest and most loyal fan-following (Called #Unicorns or #TeamSuper).

Why should you check this book out? What’s in it for you?

The #BawseBook as the #Unicorns call it is a self- help guide but not one. The quotes are not cute or fluffy, there is no over-selling involved, and you do not definitely feel like you’re drugged and floating in wonderland.

She is a Psychology major and gives out life lessons – not with complicated theories but with her experiences. She doesn’t faff around but drives the point home to readers crisply and humorously.

What is the book about?

She says that a Bawse is an achiever not only in professional life but in all other areas of life as well.

She has spoken about her experiences with co-workers, her inspirers, and friends. The book talks about the times she has failed miserably and how she overcame those issues with trial and error. She has quoted the lessons she has learnt from her life experiences.

I personally feel that it takes a lot of courage to acknowledge one’s failures openly to the public. There are do-it-yourself sessions to write out some of our goals for self-improvisation. It is not the dull black-and-white thing you normally read, the book is filled with colourful stories, celebrity references, and humour.

Objectively speaking, I am sure this guide to conquering life will be an investment. Especially because I am learning it first-hand from an experienced person. Someone who has started from scratch and has now inspired billions within a span of 6 years!

You do want to check it what the hype is all about, don’t you?
